Why does Travis Kelce wear number 87?

Travis Kelce was born in Westlake, Ohio, on October 5, 1989.

The footballer played for the Cincinnati Bearcats at the University of Cincinnati before he was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 34-year-old tight end wears the number 87 in honor of his older brother, Jason Kelce, who was born in 1987.

Jason played in the NFL for 13 seasons before retiring in March 2024.

“If there is a Kelce legacy, two brothers making it to the NFL, it all started in 1987, because this big guy was born in 1987,” Travis Kelce told NFL Films in a February 2023 interview with Jason before the duo went up against each other in Super Bowl LVII, per Today.

As Yahoo! reported via The Blast, Travis also spoke to Jason about why he chose the number when he handed his older brother his jersey during Super Bowl LVII.

“I love you. You’re the only reason why I wear the number 87 anyway,” he said.

“I never told you that, man. You started the legacy,” he continued.

Who is Jason Kelce?

Jason was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, on November 5, 1987.

Like his younger brother, he played college football for the Cincinnati Bearcats before joining the NFL.

The Philadelphia Eagles chose Jason during the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

On March 4, 2024, Jason announced his official retirement from the NFL, marking the end of a 13-year run with the Eagles.

Jason has been married to Kylie McDevitt since 2018.

The pair share three young daughters: Wyatt, Elliotte, and Bennett.
